Along with fellow NELA member, Timothy Mudd, I had the privilege of working with Donna Wade, executive director of The Miracle League of Franklin County. This community internship allowed us the opportunity to see how a passionate group of community members are working to impact the same students we serve as school employees. We also the had the unique opportunity to observe how a nonprofit organization can successfully partner with a public school system. Through this experience, I realized how valuable our community members can be, and that they are highly invested in the success of the public schools in their neighborhoods as well. One of the goals of our internship experience was to create a grant proposal. In partnership with The Miracle League of Franklin County, Timothy and I identified needs within the organization that could potentially be addressed through grant opportunities. Our grant was created to provide an inclusive recreation complex accessible to children with and without disabilities. The inclusive playground will enrich the lives of children, families and the entire community.
